Programs

SMSC conducts and teaches the Pure Vipassana meditation in the Mahasi tradition. This method is based on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, taught by the Buddha in the Satipatthana Discourse, and was developed by the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Myanmar who popularized it in the world in 1960's and 70's. Vipassana, which means "to see things as they really are", is also known as Insight Meditation or Insight Through Mindfulness. Even those with no previous meditation experience can experience results in a relatively short period of time if they are earnest and diligent in their practice.

The SMSC operates on a year-around basis, conducting weekly meditation classes and retreats. Classes are divided into series: Level 1 (4-6 weeks) Level 2 (4-6 weeks), Level 3 (6-8 weeks), Level 4 (50 weeks) and Level 5 (year around). Level 1-3 series is offered several times a year. Residential Retreats are 2 to 4 days long and holds every month. Longer residential retreats of 8 to 28 days are held one or two times per year.

Beginner Vipassana Classes Classes are an introduction to the meditation practice, to both beginners and the experienced practitioners with no previous exposure to the Pure Vipassana Meditation method (Mahasi tradition). The program consists of six weekly sessions, 2-hour long, involving guided meditation and lectures about the practice with questions and answers.

Intermediate Weekly Classes This class is 2-hour long, involving a 60-minute meditation time and a Dhamma talk (lecture about the practice with a Q and A period).

Monthly Residential Retreats are held every last weekend of a month or long weekends closest to the last weekend of a month in Summer, at Chanmyay Yeiktha Retreat Center, 19640 Silver Hope Rd, Hope, BC. Sign up for e-mail notification.

Annual Residential Retreats are held in summer of each year for 9 to 17 days, at Chanmyay Yeiktha Retreat Center. Pre-registration and acceptance is required. Limited space.
